The 69 Eyes headlined a show at Brighton Music Hall on Monday night. The band created almost as much buzz as the eclipse that day.
Opening up the night was the band Gretchen Shae & The Middle Eight. The room was half filled by the time the first band opened things up and the band got the crowd ready. From the moment they stepped on stage, the five piece band had great energy and got the crowd moving. It was clear that the crowd did not know their music as well but they got the crowd moving and dancing, clearly enjoying the music and gaining some new fans that night.
Next up was the band
Budderside. If the first band got the crowd moving, Budderside woke them up even further. The band had catchy and upbeat music that instantly got the crowd moving and making noise. The vocalist did an amazing job of getting the crowd to participate and wake up. This is everything you want in an opening act, getting the crowd excited and ready for the headliner. The instrumentals were easy to dance to and the vocalist did a great job at getting the crowd to join in, even teaching the crowd some easy hooks to sing along to.
The night had been electric so far, but somehow kept getting better. It is not usual that three opening bands match the band’s vibe in music and also put on a good show but all three opening bands this night did not disappoint. The last opening band for the evening was
The Bites. This band’s energy was contagious. The vocalist’s high energy matched their electric vocals and the instrumentals kept right up too. The music made it impossible not to at the very least bop your head or dance along. The band did their best job at pumping up the crowd and warmed the goth hearts of Boston right in time for the headliners.
Finally it was time for the stars of the night – the vampires themselves,
The 69 Eyes. From the moment they stepped onto the stage, the crowd was cheering and screaming. Every element of the show was perfection, the lighting, the dance moves, the vocals, the instrumentals, the banter in between songs. The Finnish band, The 69 Eyes have been a classic in the goth scene of music with being on the scene as early as 1989. The band has dozens of hits that span the last few decades, older songs and new songs. The crowd was varied in age just showing the range of ages and time spans the band’s music has touched.
The band’s unique sound and style was reflected in the varied in the crowd’s response from different dance styles and singing along to their various hits through their set. One thing was clear, the crowd was enjoying their set. The sound was almost exact to their recordings, nothing lacking in their live sound and it was clear they were experts in putting on a live show. The band played such hits as “Burn Witch Burn”, “Lost Boys”, and “I Love The Darkness In You”. Despite it being a Monday night and the same day as a rare eclipse, this concert was clearly the highlight of many people’s week.
