LANY Headlines at MGM Music Hall at Fenway

LANY along with opening support from Conor Burns and Junior Varsity play to a nearly sold out crowd at MGM Music Hall at Fenway.
First up for the evening was Conor Burns. He came bursting onto the stage full of energy and kept up positive energy throughout his entire performance. Conor was everything you would want from an opening act that you may not know before coming to the show, he put on a show! and interacted with the crowd to win them over. By the end of his performance, he had gained some new fans and the crowd was more excited for the next act. Conor was running all over the large stage and runway, not wasting any time on his set to make the most of his performance. His vocals were just as impressive, not missing a note or lyric even though he was being so active.

The next opening act for the night was the band Junior Varsity. Right off the bat from the intro to their first song, it was clear their sound was a bit different than the first opening act. This was a full band with two vocalists rather than a vocalist with a couple members of a backing band. Their sound was full of positivity and life, it was upbeat and easy to dance to. The crowd seemed to enough the entire set thoroughly. There was lots of cheers and applause at the end of each song, sometimes even during the songs, also some fans singing along. The male vocalist had mentioned their second vocalist, a female, was a new addition to the band. As someone watching the band for the first time, their stage presence was very cohesive and seemed like they had been performing together for years. The pair of vocalists brought a refreshing twist to the band.

Finally it was time for the stars of the night, LANY. From the moment the band dropped the white curtain covering the stage while they had been setting up, the crowd broke into loud excited cheers. The pop band more than matched the crowd’s high energy. It was clear that most of the crowd had gone for the headlining band, the crowd’s vocals singing along filling up the room and at times even louder than the band’s music.

The stage setup was impressive, in addition to the runway part of the stage they had also set up more platforms for the instrumental members of the band and also their own hanging screen for the people further in the crowd or up in the seats to get a better look at the stage. The theatrics didn’t end there with the vocalist Paul Klein bringing out a big bundle of roses as a prop at a couple points and there also being moments of  beach balls for the crowd to play with and confetti falling.

The band played a long setlist that consisted of older hits and newer songs, a perfect mix that reflected their years of music. Some of the hits they played included “Malibu Nights”, “‘Cause You Have To”, “13” and “Thick and Thin”. Their live sound was spot on from their recorded albums. The live sound that might have even been better, Paul’s live vocals having the perfect balance of control and emotion.
