On Wednesday night there was a special treat of a punk show held at Brighton Music Hall in Boston, MA. The show had Strung Out headlining with support from bands Mercy Music and Adolescents.
First up for the night was the opener Mercy Music. The band may not be as well known as the other two bands of the night but they didn’t let that slow down their performance at all. As soon as they hit the stage the band had great energy and did their best to get the crowd involved. The three piece band was making the most of the small stage with moving all around as much as they could. The crowd seemed won over by the end of their set and warmed up for the next band.
The next opener was the band Adolescents. It was clear from the crowd’s reaction that the band was well known and had some existing fans at the show. The spin-off band of Social Distortion has been a band since 1979. There has been many lineup changes over the years with the lead vocalist Tony Reflex as the only original member, but the sound has stayed true through all their years. Don’t let their age fool you though, Adolescents threw down just as hard as the openers and gave the crowd all they could have asked for. One crowd member even shouted in between songs that ‘they sounded even better with age’.
Finally, it was time for the stars of the night, Strung Out. They haven’t been around as their openers Adolescents but they have been a staple in the punk rock music scene for many years since their origin in 1989. Older fans and younger fans alike came together for their love of the band’s music through the years during their set. As soon they stepped on stage, vocalist and front-man, Jason Cruz commanded the stage with his presence. He was front and center, passionately singing and hitting every note he needed to. The rest of the band matched with the energy, all of them moving around the stage and even taking turns coming close to the crowd. There wasn’t too much in between song banter but they just kept the show going with hit after hit from their discography and some new songs sprinkled in. I would say, much like their opener, this band not slowed down or missed a beat, they have gotten better with time.
