Marianas Trench finally comes back to Boston and plays at House of Blues, with support from Cassadee Pope and PIAO.
First up was the opener, PIAO, a new pop artist. Her sound might not be what most people would expect from an opener for Marianas Trench but she won over the crowd with her fun and upbeat energy. She talked to the crowd in between most songs, opening up about things such as going to college in Boston and stories about her childhood. She got a good chuckle from the crowd when she said ‘no more Sadness Everdeen’ about switching it up and no more sad songs. Her musical style ranged from slow emotional songs played with a piano which held the crowd’s attention and hanging on every word to upbeat and happy pop that she was dancing along to on the stage. She may have been the only one on the stage but her personality truly shined and her presence filled the room.
Next was the pop-punk powerhouse Cassadee Pope. Most older fans probably know Cassadee Pope from when she was the front-woman of Hey Monday. She also competed on the third season of the television show The Voice and became the first female winner. Since winning The Voice, she had been putting out country style solo music for a few albums but she has come back to her pop-punk roots with her latest release. This tour was the perfect way for some of the old fans to be reconnected to her and hear some old and new music.
Cassadee Pope’s voice is just as flawless in person, easily hitting her high notes and making it sound effortless. There was a special treat for the older fans with her singing a couple of Hey Monday songs. With her recent change in style, it was no surprise that she was playing most songs off her latest release Hereditary, with songs such as “People That I Love Leave”, “Eye Contact”, and the title track “Hereditary”. Her confidence while performing is apparent to anyone wanting, she is at home on stage, dancing around and belting out her tunes. There was also a kind moment where she stopped her band mid-song to make sure that a fan who seemed to be struggling in the crowd was okay, showing how much she really cares for her fans.
Finally, it was time for the stars of the night, Marianas Trench. This four piece Canadian pop-punk band had insane energy from the exact moment that they hit the stage. Lead vocalist, Josh Ramsay, demands everyone’s attention and all eyes on him with his stage presence and vocal performance. It is clear the band puts a lot of thought and time into making their show just how they want it from their clothing and the decorations on stage, Josh’s mike stand even changing colors to go with the rest of the stage lights.
Whereas most bands would strive to make their performance as spot on to the recorded albums as they can, Marianas Trench takes it even a step further and out-does their recorded songs. Josh put an extra vocal flair on a handful of songs and other band members Mike Ayley on bass and Matt Webb on guitar even took a turn on vocals for a song each, proving that they were also multi-talented.
They played an array of older and new songs, something for a fan of any era of their music. It was clear that the crowd was happy to see the band, cheering and dancing along to all of the songs, singing back so loud at times the crowd could be heard over the band. There was moments where the band talked to the crowd in between songs and admitted they hadn’t been to Boston in quite a while, five years, and it was obvious by the crowd’s reaction that it had been too long. To the crowd’s excitement they did promise to be back sooner next time before the end of the show.
