In late February, Boston’s City Hall Plaza got a taste of heavy metal – no, not the kind you’re thinking of. Energy drink company Red Bull brought their single-day touring snowboard competition to The Hub. The “heavy metal” title is a reference to how snowboarders ride down the metal railings around City Hall Plaza.
300 tons of snow were brought in via trucks from Loon Mountain to turn the center of Boston’s government into a giant snowboarding course. The course was divided into the three zones. One coming down the steps that lead from the plaza into City Hall’s lobby, one turning the mezzanine steps into giant launch ramps, and one on the steps that lead from city hall plaza down to Congress St.
Though only expected to draw about 4,000 spectators, local officials estimated full turnout to be around 20,000 marking a major success for the event.
